Many of us in this art medium of etching went online and used the floor wax option that roughly does the job, but at the end of the day, does not meet the critical requirements to enable this product to be used broadly. Therefore I decided that we needed to improve the hard ground so it that it spread across the etching plate better, was easier to scribe upon, and held up well in the acid bath. We also wanted a formulation that was both easy to clean from the plate and easy to re-apply when you want to do more line work, it is transparent enough you can see previous lines and your new line.  It also works well for aquatint using an airbrush. 

I asked chemist Joseph Salanga to come on board with me to develop an improved product. Leveraging Joe’s ability as a materials scientist and expertise in film-formers, we were able to develop formula that works. The critical criterion was that any chemicals used in the formulation had to be completely no-toxic, therefore safe to handle.  You don’t have to use dangerous chemicals to clean your plate afterwards.
